Frequently Asked Questions
How are stimulation scores calculated?
Each show is rated across five research-informed dimensions: pacing (how quickly scenes change), visual stimulation (colour intensity and complexity), audio stimulation (volume and sound effects), narrative intensity (conflict and emotional tone), and engagement hooks (cliffhangers and re-watch design). These are combined into an overall score from 1 (very calm) to 10 (high stimulation).
What do the stimulation levels mean?
Shows are categorised into five levels: Very Calm (1–2) for slow-paced, minimal stimulation; Calm (2–4) for gentle, slightly more active content; Moderate (4–6) for mainstream educational shows; Stimulating (6–8) for faster-paced, more intense content; and High Stimulation (8–10) for very fast, visually intense shows.
Is my family's data private?
Yes. All data stays on your device. The App doesn't collect personal information, use analytics, or send any data to external servers. Child names and ages are stored in encrypted on-device secure storage for additional protection. See the full Privacy Policy for details.
How do child profiles work?
You can create a profile for each child with their name, age, and avatar. The App uses their age to recommend age-appropriate shows and automatically creates a Favourites watchlist with calm picks suited to their age range. You can switch between profiles to see personalised recommendations for each child.
What are watchlists?
Watchlists let you save pre-approved shows for each child. When it's screen time, your child can choose from shows you've already vetted — no more deciding in the moment. Each child gets their own watchlists, and a Favourites list is created automatically when you add a child profile.
What is the stimulation threshold?
The stimulation threshold is a preference you set during onboarding (and can change in Settings). It filters search results and recommendations to only show content at or below your chosen stimulation level. For example, setting it to "Calm" will prioritise shows rated 4 or below.
Can I use the App offline?
Yes. The App works fully offline. All show data, ratings, and wind-down tips are stored locally on your device. No internet connection is required for any core feature.
How do I suggest a show that's not in the App?
Tap "Can't find a show?" on the Home screen or go to the Suggest a Show screen. Enter the show name and any optional details, then submit. I review all suggestions and add new shows in regular updates.
What are wind-down tips?
The Wind-Down section provides evidence-based guidance for calmer evenings, including the bedtime buffer (stopping screens 1 hour before bed), blue light advice, choosing appropriate wind-down shows, transition strategies, and signs to watch for. All tips are grounded in AAP guidelines and sleep research.
How do bedtime reminders work?
You can set a daily bedtime reminder in Settings > Notifications. This sends a local notification at your chosen time to remind you to start winding down screen time. Notifications are generated entirely on your device — no data is sent externally.
